Mail Solutions
By:Melissa Stacey on Thu 17 Jul 2008 12:13 PM under Get Organized

I have found that one of the biggest problem areas in many households is incoming mail.  Managing your mail can be challenging because of all of the “stuff” we are sent every day.  Two ways to stop the junk mail are to contact www.dmachoice.org or www.greendimes.com.

The most important part of controlling your incoming mail is creating a system that you will maintain.  Here are a few ideas to help get you started:

  • Mail CenterCreate a small mail center including an in-box, stamps, envelopes and mailing labels.  Make sure the in-box is not too large, it should not hold more than a weeks worth of mail.  Keep the mail center and in-box somewhere where you can see it and don’t let your mail overflow out of the box.
  • Shred & Recycle – I recommend having a shredder and recycle bin close by your mail center.  That way you can recycle all of the junk mail right away and shred anything that has your address on it.  By doing this, the only mail that will go into your in-box is the mail you really need.  It will be less overwhelming when you go through it later.
  • Magazines & Catalogs – Pull out the magazines and catalogs right away so it does not stack up in your in-box and take up a lot of space.  If you are receiving catalogs or magazines that you no longer read, email the company and ask to be removed from their mailing list.  You should also do this if you are receiving duplicates.
  • Schedule It – Choose a day each week that you are going to go through you in-box.  You may even want to consider putting it on your calendar.
  • Separate – Separate your mail into piles.  I typically have 3 piles; To Do (immediate attention), Pending (needs attention soon) and To File.  I suggest dealing with the action items immediately, but if this is not possible, buy an organizer with 3 shelves.  Each shelf will have its own pile of paperwork.  This should also be very visible to you so that you do not forget about it.
