An emoticon is a great substitute for an expressive face. We as a people are very visual. And when we talk face to face, we may be heard but our message gets understood and retained better when our eyes lips and the rest of our face works up its magic and expresses our feelings.
So when writing official emails, try this. Use your discretion and put a few smilies (emoticons) in. Smilies make the tone of your message positive, upbeat and encouraging. If that is what you want it to be like
Emoticons also blunt edges of rawness in communication. Consider these statements with and without emoticons –
Refusal:
No thanks.
No thanks
Differing opinion:
I beg to differ
I beg to differ
Persistence:
I assume you have been and are busy. Here’s my third reminder.

Apologies:
Hope it didn’t cause trouble. Sorry about that.
